RENEW
PSYCHIATRY
Traditional Psychiatry
with a Renewed Approach
Thomas Ugelstad, PMHNP-BC
Romans 12:2 “...be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and
acceptable and perfect...”
PHILOSOPHY
I started Renew Psychiatry to further my focus on holistic treatment for my clients. As a Christian, I believe that people are made in the image of God and have three parts: mind, body, and spirit. I believe all three of these parts should be considered in psychiatry.
One of the first questions I will ask you is: “What does successful treatment mean to you?” My main priority is your satisfaction with the outcomes you are experiencing and the life you’re living. I believe my job is to support you along your journey, not to define your path for you.
Here are some of the principles of my treatment approach:
- “Less is more” when it comes to medications
- Diagnoses describe clusters of symptoms, not people
- Every person is unique, and treatment approaches should also be unique
- You are in the driver’s seat, I am only here to offer guidance and support
- If you want radically different results, you must have a radically different approach
About tom
I grew up in Fargo, North Dakota and have lived here most of my life. I attended the University of Jamestown for my undergraduate degree before attending graduate school at the University of North Dakota. I won’t bore you with my full work history, though some of my favorite past jobs include working at the North Dakota State Hospital and working as an interim nursing home chaplain. I also instruct clinicals for nurses and nurse practitioners.
In my free time I enjoy bicycling, running, listening to music, reading books, and spending time with church friends. I love reading research articles and studying a wide variety of topics as well. I don’t own a TV, and I don’t use social media. If I’m trying to relax and unwind, you will probably find me working on one of my beater cars or playing pickleball.
